My MoBible v1
Download the Bible onto your mobile phone! (or PDA)Features:
- Go to a specific book or jump to a specific passage easily.
- Store bookmarks so you can go back later.
- Show/hide verse numbers and other options.
- Search for verses containing specific words (equivalent to a concordance).
- No Internet costs when using it (everything is already on your mobile).
- The look and feel is great (on my mobile anyway) because it uses the phone's themes to render the user interface.
- Four download sizes to suit your mobile.
- The Bible text is the World English Bible version (not dissimilar to ASV and NIV).
- "Your software is AWESOME!"
- "What an excellent idea!"
- "Great 'search' and 'go to passage' features. I am enjoying it. Thank you very much!"
- "This is super-awesome! It has become a common thing to bluetooth across to friends at church meetings and even in uni lectures!"
- "It's great!"
- "Ur mobile bible is the best"
- "Thank you for your excellent program. I've been using it on my cell phone for a few months already and I think that it is really very good. This is the best software of such kind I have ever seen."
- Choose which version you want:
- Mark (73K)
- the New Testament (605K)
- the New Testament plus some important Old Testament books (1.4MB)
- the whole Bible (2.4MB)
- Download the version you want onto a computer that can transfer it to your phone. (This means the computer either has a data cable for your phone, or Infra Red or Bluetooth - most laptops will have one of these.) Download it by right-clicking on the relevant link above, and selecting "Save Target As..." and save it on your desktop.
- If, when downloaded, the file is named "mobible.zip", rename it to "mobible.jar".
- Transfer "mobible.jar" to your phone. Your phone will recognise the file type and know how to handle it. It should show up as a game or Java application.
Notes:
- The World English Bible (WEB) is the most recent public domain version I could find (if there is a better one, let me know). I obtained it from The Unbound Bible and I haven't modified it in any way other than to put it in a format suitable for my program. Big thanks to them for publishing it. There's some extra information about the WEB here (which I think is the WEB's homepage?).
- This program will not work with some older mobiles. If your mobile won't let you install Java games, then chances are, this application won't work either. Also, some older phones have quite severe restrictions on the size of a jar file it will let you install. My phone won't let me use the whole bible version, I get "This application uses too much memory" errors). The others work fine though.
- For the security-conscious/paranoid, I've digitally signed the jar files so you can be sure the content hasn't been tinkered with. You can verify your copy against the signature by using my GnuPG public key (get it from here) and the relevant signature: [Mark] [the New Testament] [the New Testament plus some important Old Testament books] [the whole Bible].
- If your mobile needs a "jad" file to get this to work, contact me.
- Please feel free to re-distribute this application, but let me know if you do.
- For more information, a copy of the source code, or if you have any ideas that would improve this program, contact me.
- The main thing that needs doing is making the search facility better, e.g. with ANDs and ORs, restricting to specific (groups of) books, and so on, as biblegateway allows you to. I've also had some ideas that will make searching a lot faster too. Not sure when I'll get round to implementing them though.
- I was going to call it just "MoBible" (a play on "mobile" and "Bible") but someone beat me to it...
- My Mobible has been translated into Lithuanian (and a few other languages), see this page. I tried it on my emulator but I have no clue what it says cos it's all in Lithuanian! It all seemed to work though. There are some screenshots of it running on the emulator on that page too.
